Day 42: Seward, Alaska

Today was our tour of the Kenai Fjords Glacier and Wildlife cruise with lunch.  It was a rainy and cooler day as we gathered at the shuttle bus at 10 a.m. in the RV park to take a short tour of Seward and then boarded the catamaran, The Star of the Northwest,  for a 5-6 hour cruise in Resurrection Bay.
On the way to the boat tour, our driver of the shuttle bus took us by several buildings built in the early 1900's.  We drove by the Benny Benson Memorial.  Benny designed the Alaska flag at age 13 that was raised for the first time on July 9, 1927.  We also toured through St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

Shortly after we boarded the catamaran and got under way we had a delicious Alaska salmon and prime rib meal.

The National Park Service Ranger, Lani Lockwood, was on board to explain what we were seeing as we toured the Northwestern Fjord, the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge and Resurrection Bay.

The seas got pretty rough as we neared the Gulf of Alaska and the fog was heavy.  But the last part of the day was much nicer and the sun even came out in places. We saw many birds such as the Bald Eagles, Cormorants, Murres, Horned and Tufted Puffins plus several gulls.  We also saw Steller Sea Lions,  Mountain Goats, Porpoise and Sea Otters.

Toward the end of the day Ranger Lani Lockwood handed out Junior Ranger Badges to youngsters who completed required questioners.   Of those receiving the badges was David from our group. Congratulations David.

The shuttle bus got us back to camp about 5:20.
