Day 33: Denali, Alaska

On our “free day” today, many of us chose to go on an optional white water rafting trip.  We experienced a great 12 mile ride down the Nenana River complete with class 3 and 4 rapids.  Our group had 3 rafts.  The 2 larger rafts had a guide who did all of the oaring.  Our raft was the smallest of the 3 and our guide directed us as we all paddled.  The Nenana River is a glacial river.  The water temperature is 36-38 degrees and was part of a glacier less than 24 hours ago.

The waterproof dry suits kept us warm and dry.  Those of us who paddled had to wear helmets. They were to protect us from the potential thumping from the other paddlers.

Those who did not join us on the rafting trip enjoyed the restaurants and gift shops in the Healy, Alaska area.

Our social hour tonight was made complete by our “Happy Anniversary” tribute to Jim and Helen Neher’s 28th wedding anniversary.
