Day 4 – Travel to Calgary

It must have been something after 5:00 AM that a thunderstorm got Paul out of bed to close the windows and vents.  Then at 7:00 on the radio at breakfast time, we learned that the thunderstorm was centered at Fort Macleod.

We also we heard that three horses died in an accident at the chuck wagon races at the Calgary Stampede.  By 8:30 many had left the campground.

At Fort Macleod the weather was not bad at all and a group of us gathered and stood around to take pictures.  Then all went in a bunch so there was a line to check in at about 9:30.  We had plenty of time to look the store and fort over before the horses and riders in uniform entered the center of the fort compound and stood at the flag-post.

All the riders were young girls who were probably more into western riding, but they did well even on some difficult maneuvers.

Tammy Aronson was selected to inspect the horses. They were well groomed and Tammy did a superb job

From there some went to the Lancaster Air Museum, some tried to stop at the Safeway, IGA and gas station at Cochrane and found the parking lot too small and some just went on to the Spring Hill RV Park.

The gathering at 5:00 was the usual conversation, beverages and goodies, and then we went back to our rigs for dinner.

Joan made notes on the countryside as we passed.  The most prominent were the canola fields, followed by the windmills and the tractor eggs, and she did a watercolor sketch of them.
